ACHA seeking Area Committee members to help improve Argyll and Bute housing

Following December’s hugely successful ballot result in which 90% of voting tenants backed housing transfer, Argyll Community Housing Association Limited (ACHA) is now looking to build on strong levels of local support for its plans by recruiting members for its Area Committees.

The four Area Committee are being set up to serve Helensburgh and Lomond, Bute and Cowal, Oban Lorn and the Isles, and Mid Argyll and Kintyre. They will make vital decisions on local housing issues including helping to plan priorities for new housing investment, shaping housing services for all tenants, especially the elderly, younger people and children, all with the aim of delivering ACHA’s promise to improve the quality of social housing across Argyll and Bute.

Anyone interested in getting involved (non-tenants as well as tenants) can come along to one of a series of information sessions that will be held locally.

ACHA Chairman Norman Beaton commented, “ACHA has been set up to put the needs of tenants first. To help us achieve this we are extremely keen to work with and get the input of as many tenants as possible and for this reason we are looking for interested community representatives to get involved on our local committees. Although the majority of committee members will be tenants it’s not only tenants we’re looking for, we’d be delighted to talk to any member of the community who thinks they have something to offer.”

ACHA is looking for interested and committed individuals to get involved. The majority of the Committee members will be tenants; however there will be a number of places available to non-tenants over the age of 18.

Area Committees are expected to meet 10 times a year with meetings taking place every four to six weeks. Although positions are voluntary and unpaid, ACHA will cover out of pocket expenses such as travel. ACHA will also provide training for committee members.

Those who are unable to attend information sessions but who would still like to be considered for a role on one of the Area Committees should contact Gillian McInnes at ACHA, 63-65 Chalmers Street, Ardrishaig, PA30 8DX or call 01546 604088. Alternatively you can send an email requesting further information to gillian.mcinnes@acha.co.uk.

Housing transfer itself is expected to take place in July of this year, subject to approval from the Scottish Executive. Between now and the official handover, ACHA will be working closely with organisations including the Council to negotiate the exact terms of the transfer before signing a legally binding contract.
