Welfare Rights

There are a number of changes happening to the benefits you may be eligible for. The most significant change has been the roll out of Universal Credit. For working aged people this is replacing the following benefits:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit

If you need to make a new application for any of these benefits you will need to apply online for Universal Credit at www.gov.uk/apply-universal-credit The video below provides step by step instructions. It also tells you the information you will need to make your claim, for example; your bank details, national insurance number and your weekly rent amount to claim housing costs within your universal credit claim.

A number of benefits are being devolved to Scotland including; Best Start Grant, Best Start Food, Funeral Support Payments and Young Carers Grant. For further information about these and a timetable for new benefits becoming available go to www.socialsecurity.gov.scot.
